About Metro Schools Chess

Metro Schools Chess serves as the central coordinating body for school chess in the Cape Metro region. We manage tournaments, coaching, player development, and team selections in line with FIDE, CHESS South Africa, and WCSC standards. Our purpose is to make chess a transformational force in education – promoting discipline, creativity, and unity among learners from every background.

Our Vision

To make chess an essential part of every learner’s educational journey – nurturing strategic thinkers, confident leaders, and responsible citizens through the game of chess.

Our Mission

Metro Schools Chess (MSC) promotes chess as both a sport and an educational tool across schools in the Cape Metro region. We inspire young minds through chess – building critical thinking, concentration, confidence, and sportsmanship.

MSC is committed to equal opportunities for all learners, teachers, and schools, ensuring that every child, regardless of background, can access the many benefits of chess.

Our History

Metro Schools Chess was established as the official governing body for school chess in the Cape Metro region.

Operating under Western Cape Schools Chess (WCSC), MSC unites the four educational districts:

  • Metro North
  • Metro South
  • Metro East
  • Metro Central

Since its founding, MSC has worked to grow chess participation, particularly within previously disadvantaged communities, and to build a vibrant, inclusive chess culture that reflects the diversity of our schools.

Our Goals

  • Promote and develop chess as a sport and learning activity in all Metro schools.
  • Provide equal access and opportunities for learners, coaches, arbiters, and administrators.
  • Train and empower teachers to deliver quality chess instruction in classrooms and clubs.
  • Identify and nurture young talent to represent the Western Province at national and international levels.
  • Build partnerships with schools, sports bodies, and community organisations to strengthen the chess network.
  • Improve resources and infrastructure, including tournaments, training, and equipment.
  • Uphold transparency, fairness, and integrity in all organisational and competitive matters.
